10 reasons to root your android device
If you are a member of Android Green Army, chances are you might have rooted you android phone, or heard about it, or absolutely have no idea what rooting is. This article is for all those who don’t know about rooting an android phone and what it is. Rooted users will also get tons of info for enhancing their overall android phone experience.
What is Rooting?
The android version you use on your mobile has certain limitations put forth by the carriers and hardware manufacturers, which gives you limited access to your android device. Certainly, you can tweak a lot of things in your mobile but these are only those that are allowed by the carriers and manufacturers.
In order to gain root access to your phone and tweak things to the deepest level you need to Root your android device. Rooting an android phone gives you full rights to make changes to your OS, backup all of your phone data or even install a full blown Linux Distro. But if you don’t want to get that Geeky with your Android Device, there is still plethora of benefits that you will get by gaining root access to your device.
Keep that in mind- rooting your android device voids your Warranty and if you are unsuccessful in rooting, you may brick your device. But all the unsuccessful rooting attempts doesn’t end up bricking your phone so stay assured if you do all things right you won’t have to face any bad experience. Developers are working day and night to make the Rooting process simple that not even techies but also laymen can follow to root their device easily without going through any painful or un-understandable process.
This article is not about how you can root your device because summing up rooting process for all the devices out there is hardly possible. Different devices by different manufacturers have entirely different rooting process. So, in order to do that you will have to head over to those websites that will give you detailed rooting process procedure. My personal favorite websites are XDA Forums and Android Forums.
These are the benefits of rooting your device – in no particular order.
1- Bloat Banishment
Bloatware also famously known as crapware, effects majority of the android devices. Bloatware is the application bundle that majority of the carriers and mobile phone manufactures add to your mobile phone in order to market their own services and sometimes (:p) increase your productivity. The bad news is this bloatware eats up your devices memory, hogs down your mobile’s performance and most of the time you are not allowed to delete it. Why keep the bloatware when you have several good replacements options in android market. By rooting your android phone you can get rid of this crap and use the freed memory for some other purpose.
2- Latest OS
Damm! Why I am always two updates behind. This is the most common complain we hear from android users, frequently from those who have made as far as Ice Cream Sandwich.
The reason why we get the android updates late is that our Phone skins are built on top of stock android, so once the update reaches the carriers and phone manufactures they customize it to make their android flavors according to the latest update. This is why we are always late to get the latest version.
Android Developers are on the other hand working day and night to bring out the latest Android Updates to your devices even before the carriers and the manufactures – Another good reason why rooting your device is worth it.
3- Ditch the Skin
Most of the Android Enthusiasts rightly hate the software skins that are built on top of Stock Android. These skins are mostly heavy, design-wise ugly and destroy the overall android experience. I have used TouchWiz and Sense skins they are no way near stock android in terms of design, fluidity and user experience.
These skins are also one of the reasons why we get the latest android updates very late.
4- Customization – Custom ROMS
Rooting a Device is commonly confused with installing Custom ROMS. Yes! 90% of the users who root their device install custom ROMS because installing Custom ROMS is the most powerful feature of a rooted device.
Custom ROMS change the whole User Interface of your Device so, you can choose from hundreds of custom ROMS which one you like. Some of the custom ROMS focus on giving your extra functionality and some of the ROMS makes your overall device experience very smooth and beautiful. The best thing about installing custom ROMS is you never get bored of your device. Once you start to get bore you can flash in new ROM and bamm! Your device is new all over again.
5- Whole world of new Apps
By rooting your android device you can install apps that can access deep down your operating system and perform their tasks more painlessly. For example, Super User is an application that only runs on a rooted device and it allows you to give privilege (to other apps) of accessing the root of your device.
In some cases you will be able to install apps that carriers, manufacturers even Google doesn’t want you to. Some of the applications will in fact allow you to do tasks of questionable rightfulness :p
6- Better Backup
There are plenty of backup applications that kinda backup your phone but the backup only comprises of the surface data like Messages, Pictures, Videos and Contacts. But after rooting your android device you can create an image of the whole OS. You can even backup the applications and their settings isn’t it amazing? Titanium Backup is one such application that allows you to back up your device to the deepest level, even it allows you to get rid of the pesky bloat-ware from your phone.
7- Battery Life boost
Custom ROMS boosts your battery life through their custom effectiveness settings. Some of the custom ROMS are built specifically to boost your battery life and enhance your overall device’s experience. There are plenty of applications that increase your battery life by automatically adjusting your phone settings i-e decreasing the brightness, switching off your WIFI and Data etc. You don’t get these benefits without rooting your device.
8- Freeing up memory
When you install an application on your phone it is installed on the system memory – by rooting your device you can move these applications to SD card easily and hence can save a lot of memory. In the above points I have also mentioned that you can remove the bloatware that can also help freeing up devices memory.
When you root your android device you also get control over the hardware components, making overclocking and undervolting possible. Has your phone started to get laggy? You can install applications that can overclock and make your device super-fast. It’s very common to overclock a 1GHz CPU to 1.6GHz, of course with greater chances of instability.
Prior to Ice Cream sandwich android devices didn’t have the ability to take screenshots. Now you don’t have to wait for the Ice cream sandwich update to take screenshots on your device. All you need to do is root your android device and install applications that will serve the purpose.
These are some of the best benefits I have come up with, there are numerous other benefits that you will get by rooting your device, but at the end of the day it’s your personal choice. If you are ready to take the risk, and are comfortable with voiding the warranty, rooting your device is worth it.
If you use smartphone for just calling or making messages I would recommend not taking the risk.
